  67. Kennedy Space Center technicians working to prepare Columbia for its upcoming
  68. STS-55 D-2 Spacelab mission report they will roll Columbia to the Vehicle
  69. Assembly Building sometime later today for mating of the orbiter to its
  70. external tank and solid rocket boosters.

  72. Briefings on the mission objectives and science experiments will be held at the
  73. Johnson Space Center tomorrow and Thursday, Feb. 3 and 4.  The briefings will
  74. be carried live on NASA Select television, and will begin at 9:30 am EST on
  75. Wednesday.

  77. KSC management will hold its launch readiness review on Monday, Feb. 8.  The
  78. NASA Office of Space Flight management's formal Flight Readiness Review will be
  79. held at KSC on Wednesday, Feb. 11.  The launch dress rehearsal with the
  80. astronaut and ground launch team crews will take place on Feb. 11 and 12, with
  81. the simulated launch time at 11:00 am EST on Feb. 12.

  83. Preparations on Columbia continue to proceed on a schedule which could allow
  84. the launch of the STS-55 mission in late February. The STS-55 mission is the
  85. second dedicated German research flight; the first was the D-1 mission which
  86. flew on STS-61A in November 1985.  This flight is scheduled as an 8-day and
  87. 22-hour, seven- crewmember mission with the Spacelab long module and a variety
  88. of scientific discipline investigations.  This mission's major Spacelab
  89. facilities will continue the exploration of fluid physics and human
  90. physiological changes in microgravity.

  94. In response to a General Accounting Office report that disclosed cost overruns
  95. in the Space Station Freedom program, NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin said
  96. "NASA is in general agreement with the GAO on this retrospective report, and we
  97. have already initiated numerous reform efforts in procurement and program
  98. management." Goldin also said that he "intends to hold this agency to its
  99. promise and Space Station managers, at all levels, to their obligation to
  100. deliver Freedom on schedule and within the prescribed budget." Goldin concluded
  101. by noting that NASA is committed to giving America a strong and vital space
  102. program that is relevant and cost- effective."

  106. In a ceremony held late last week, Administrator Goldin awarded Gene
  107. Roddenberry, creator of the original Star Trek television series, the NASA
  108. Distinguished Public Service Medal. The posthumous award was made to
  109. Roddenberry's widow, Majel Barrett Roddenberry, in a ceremony at the
  110. Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. The citation on the medal reads "For
  111. distinguished service to the Nation and the human race in presenting the
  112. exploration of space as an exciting frontier and a hope for the future."
  113. Roddenberry died in October 1991, though his series lives on in syndication and
  114. spawned Star Trek - The Next Generation, which recently spawned a series about
  115. a space station called Star Trek - Deep Space Nine.
